School Carbon and Ecological Footprint Calculator

 

A Carbon Footprint is the total amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released into the atmosphere as a result of a set of activities. The carbon calculator in this tool takes account of the energy used in the school, how teachers and students travel to and from school, the incoming deliveries to the school canteen, the water use during the school day and the disposal of school waste.

 

An Ecological Footprint is an indicative area of land required to support a set of activities or a population. The Ecological Footprint method was derived by Chambers, Simmons and Wackernagel as an indicator of sustainability. The methodology contains a number of assumptions about the relationships between energy, CO2, biodiversity, water and land. The Ecological Footprint, which is measured in an 'hectare' (an approximate representation of land of "average" productivity).

 

The ecological calculator in this tool takes account of the energy used in the school, how teachers and students travel to and from school, the embodied energy of school meals, the water use during the school day and the disposal of school waste.
